Is it OK to talk during a massage?

November 1 2015

Of course! Though, don't do it on my account. You are getting massage, you aren't here to entertain me. We don't HAVE to chat unless you want to. For many people, talking is part of the relaxation process. You need to GET. IT. OUT. And that is totally OK by me!

Why I charge what I charge

October 1 2015

Money. Such a sticky subject. But, I am all about transparency, so let's just talk about the elephant in the room.

I charge less than a spa, but more than a franchise.

Can massage make me sick?

September 1 2015

Short answer? No.

Longer answer...

To get sick, you need to be exposed to a pathogen (bacteria, virus, etc.) which then needs to incubate before symptoms set in.

Is it OK to fall asleep during a massage?

August 1 2015

Yes, you may snore. In fact, you probably DO snore since you are lying directly on your face. You may even drool! But, yes, it's perfectly OK to fall asleep during a massage! Some people stress out about this. Sometimes, because they feel it's rude or inappropriate to fall asleep during a massage. I am not offended!

Why should I drink water after a massage?

June 1 2015

I am sure you have heard it. “Drink lots of water after your massage.” You have probably even been handed a cup of water after your massage session just so your massage therapist can be sure you are drinking at least a few ounces (because we all know you are going for the large coffee or cocktail after your massage if left unsupervised). But why should you drink water after a massage? There are a few reasons for this.

Massage and toxins

June 1 2015

You may have heard that massage ‘releases toxins’ and it’s important to ‘flush them out’ by drinking a lot of water after your massage. That is a load of codswallop. There have been no definitive studies on this. And it’s always unclear what these toxins are exactly. They certainly aren’t named or measured, so that’s a big red flag when it comes to analyzing the validity of the viewpoint.

What is sciatica/piriformis syndrome?

May 23 2015

What is sciatica/piriformis syndrome, and can massage help? Sciatica pain happens when (excuse my technical language) a big nerve that runs through your butt muscles gets squished. Typical sciatica symptoms include pain, cramping, and burning in the low back and buttock, sometimes with symptoms that stretch all the way down to the foot.

Happy Mother's Day

May 10 2015

Whether you are a mother, have a mother, or know a mother, Mother's Day is time to honor those who've played this important role. Stepmothers, birth mothers, and godmothers too. While there are as many ways of being a mother as there are moms in the world, one thing is certain: it's a tough job, but a rewarding one. Here are just three ways massage might be of service to the mothers in your life.

When it comes to pregnancy, there is a lot of urban legend out there. But, instead, our society can tend to put a lot of negativity around this time in a woman's life - read: here are all of the things you CAN'T do while pregnant. So, I am going to debunk a few common myths about prenatal massage, in an effort to educate, and also empower you with some of the things you CAN do while pregnant.

Benefits of postpartum massage

April 20 2015

My introduction to massage for the childbearing cycle came by working on many postpartum clients at my office in Brooklyn. These sessions quickly became my favorite sessions to do, and inspired me to seek out certification in pre- and post-natal massage. I had the good fortune to learn from Susanrachel Condon, a midwife and massage therapist in the Hudson Valley with over 20 years of experience.

4 ways to improve your sleep

March 19 2015

March is fun for a few reasons. Exciting basketball, green beer, and a confused body clock. Wait, that’s not fun. March is when we attempt to shake off the winter doldrums and see the light at the end of the tunnel in the form of daffodils and light sweater-weather. Daylight Savings Time robs us of a precious hour of rest we won’t see it again ‘til fall, and our sleep  cycles get all out-of-whack.

Organize yourself in the new year

January 1 2015

It's the start of a new year!! While most people attempt to revamp their diet and exercise plans at this time of year, I prefer to do a winter clean out and organize myself. It's hard to get motivated in the winter to do anything besides lie around, but reorganizing my life helps give me more energy and keeps me motivated on those cold/rainy/snowy days.
